Junior Championships in Barbados on Thursday as two lopsided results were recorded in their group.

The Bermuda under-21s started their campaign with a 7-0 defeat at the hands of Chile, the fourth ranked nation. The other match in Bermuda's group finished with an even bigger defeat for Trinidad and Tobago who went down 12-0 to world champions Argentina. In another group match Canada blasted Venezuela 10-0.

The Bermuda girls kept the Chileans at bay until the 16th minute thanks to some brilliant saves from goalkeeper Alex Lewis. But the inevitable first Chile goal came after a penalty corner strike hit the post and rebounded to one of their forwards who scored.

The second came after another good save by Lewis rebounded to a Chilean player.

After that Bermuda temporarily recovered with the defence of Lisete Moniz, Claire Dorrington, Sarah Cooper, Sharmani Thamotheram and Bonnie Leibowitch all playing with composure as they shut down the Chilean attack.

But they couldn't prevent their opponents from scoring again directly from a penalty corner which beat Lewis on the left post. Bermuda were then unlucky to see a free hit bounce off an attacker's stick and go high into the net just 40 seconds before the end of the first half for Chile's fourth.

The second half began brightly for Bermuda as captain Megan Spurling drove down the right side. But Chile recovered the ball and scored again as the Bermuda defence left an attacker unmarked on the right post in the 41st minute.

Jessica Sousa gave a fine performance as she wove through three Chilean players in the second half and continued to play well for the rest of the game. Chile's sixth goal was a great touch into the roof of the net after a free hit in the 47th minute.

Bermuda never gave up as Caroline Black in centre midfield continued to play a solid game. But another Chile goal came in the 59th minute from a penalty corner.

Despite the heavy loss, the result was an improvement on Bermuda's last match against Chile in 1997 when they went down 8-0 in the Junior Pan Ams. Bermuda were due to play their second match last night against Mexico and tomorrow meet Trinidad and Tobago. Their final group match is against Argentina next Wednesday.
