Hungry Wolfe surprises Vasco

Dandy Town inflicted a rare defeat on league leaders Vasco thanks to a single second half goal in the Dudley Eve Trophy at Somerset last night.

Heys Wolfe snatched the decider, stealing in at the far post to smash home the rebound after substitute Carlos Smith's shot had been brilliantly saved by Vasco goalkeeper Timmy Figureido.

Vasco mounted a late rally which came desperately close to producing an equaliser but Town huing on for a win they just about deserved.

Town had looked the livelier side early on and were inches away from drawing first blood in the 11th minute when Dano Outerbridge curled a 22-yard free kick around the wall but just wide of the post.

Vasco came to life four minutes later when Wayne Augustus lofted a hopeful long ball into the Town box which Clay Smith took down on his chest and volleyed fiercely into the side netting.

Town missed a great chance to break the deadlock on 24 minutes when Reggie Tucker teed up Wolde Place for a volley 15 yards from goal but Place completely missed his kick.

Vasco fluffed an even better opportunity on the half hour when Dennis Robinson sprang the offside trap but shot straight at Town keeper Jason Smith. Then Clay Smith shimmied past a defender before unleashing a fine low drive which again the keeper was equal to.

Town responded with a terrific individual effort from Devon Binns. The midfielder beat a defender before hammering a left foot drive from 20 yards which Figureido did well to parry wide.

The Vasco defence, missing the steadying influence of the suspended Kentoine Jennings, struggled to cope with the lively Binns and he almost put Town ahead with a low shot just after the break.

Moments later Town did find the net and, bolstered by the breakthrough of Wolfe's goal, they enjoyed a purple patch. Wolfe forced another acrobatic save from Figureido with an audacious swerving shot from an acute angle and then Binns saw his goalbound volley deflected over the bar off a Vasco defender.

Town had a scare in the 70th minute when Vasco were awarded a free kick inside the penalty area, apparently for obstruction. The ball was teed up for Clay Smith to shoot but Jason Smith reacted sharply to tip it wide. Vasco piled men forward in search of an equaliser and seven minutes from time they should have got one when Meshach Wade's free kick was headed down to Clifford Roberts but he swept the ball wide.
