Kavin makes no mistake this time

and Field Association cross-country season moved into high gear after the second week of competition.

Smith clocked 31 minutes, 30 seconds at the Ferry Point Park course, site of last year's national championships. Male runners ran three laps while female competitors ran two.

Anna Eatherley won the women's division, also for the second straight week, finishing her laps in 23:39, more than two minutes ahead of second-place finisher Jane Christie who finished in 25:54.

Tyler Hall, who finished in a deadlock with Smith at the season-opener at Chaplin Bay a week ago, had to settle for second place this time with a respectable finish of 32:28.

Tracy Wright finished third for the second week in a row, this time only 13 seconds behind Hall at 32:51.

In fourth spot was Brett Forgesson at 33:17.

Donna Watson was third-place finisher among women with a time of 26:12, while female triathlon champion Julie Hawley was fourth at 26:53.

Almost 70 junior runners participated in the second race in the BTFA/Minute Maid Junior Cross-Country series, also at Ferry Point Park this weekend.

The much-improved Collin Anderson won the Secondary Schools Boys three-mile race with ease in 22 minutes, 36 seconds, almost two-and-a-half minutes in front of nearest rival Mark Constable who clocked in at 25:19. Spencer Butterfield finished third with a time of 26:08.

In the Secondary Schools Girls race, Suella Matthews repeated her winning performance for the second consecutive week with a time of 13:45, followed by Heidi Madeiros at 14:05. Tamara Scraders finished third when she finished the 1.8-mile race in 15:28.

The newly-created Junior Men's Division -- for runners under 20 years old -- was captured by Quenell Robinson (22:36) with Marco Perinchief finishing in second place with a time of 26:42.

In the Primary Schools section, students from Victor Scott School, wearing their colourful new uniforms, dominated once again. Frazer Hunt led the way for the boys clocking 7:16 for the 1.2-mile race while Sherrie Seymour won the girls race in 9:02.

The next race in the series takes place on Saturday, October 30 at the Horseshoe Bay car park beginning at 9 a.m. Junior runners of all standards are invited to participate.
