Kim faces tough course

Championships at the Country Club of San Diego yesterday and after nine holes she was struggling with a score of 43 on a day where many of her fellow golfers were having troubles of their own.

The Bermudian was among the last golfers to go up against the challenging 6,330-yard, par-73 course and at Press time was six-over-par on the back nine, where she began the tournament.

Heidi Voorhees of Valley Village, California, stroked an impressive 69 after 18 holes, good for four-under-par and was the leader as many golfers continued to play.

Only two other golfers -- Leta Lindley of Carlsbad, California, and Kelly Pittman of Stateboro, Georgia -- were even par for scores of 73.

Only 36 of 80 who have completed the 18 holes had broken 80.

Today, Marshall must get through another round of stroke play before she can qualify for the all-important match play segment of the event, where only 64 of the 147 golfers competing will continue playing.

Prior to leaving for San Diego, Marshall figured that a two-round score of 150 would be sufficient to allow her to qualify.
