Mariners surprise 'Gades
sport.
Consider this: Teachers have 13 Bermudians forming their regular 1st XV and have demolished all opposition by scoring a total of 111 points in their first three games with at least 30 points against every club on the island, while conceding a paltry 28.
Add to this, the National squad named on Sunday to go to the Caribbean tournament in Trinidad next month will have 11 Teachers on the 22-man squad while Renegades have four, Police three and Mariners four. Most importantly, their are 12 Bermudians on the squad.
On Sunday, Teachers' backs totally outclassed their counterparts with speed and ball-handling ability. Police could only try and reduce the deficit by keeping the ball tight from rolling off an assortment of mauls and rucks through the expertise of Danny Cozens and Sean Field.
As soon as possession was stolen by the Red pack, the ball was expertly spun wide by Scott Correia and it was all over when speedy wings Andre Simons and Heath Robinson completed the movement.
All credit must be given to the stout Police defence that halted these attacks for over 30 minutes in the second half following a half-time score of 28-0.
First-half tries came from Patrick Cooper -- who took three men over the line with him -- and then Simons hauling in a wide pass from Scott Correia after a quick ten-metre penalty. Speedy Robinson showed a clean pair of heels to a Police defender with his fourth try of the season. Andrew Correia scored a try with help from brother Scott who opened up gaps in the Police defence.
Teachers' only try in the second half came after sustained pressure with Simons again scoring in the corner after a excellent move with Alvin Harvey.
Simons brought his tally for the day to 18 points by converting four of the tries.
Police, now 1-2, got on the scoreboard early in the second half with a try from talented Danny Cozens -- his third of the season -- who charged from the lineout.
Mariners 18, Renegades 0 Despite coming into the game 0-2, Mariners success story continued with their first win against Renegades (1-2) in six years. Mariners were more aggressive than 'Gades in all phases of the game and showed good basic skills. With proper match planning they should see them add several more wins this season.
Renegades, coming off three very impressive seasons, looked like a shadow of their 1993 team, with no penetration in the backs and fewer ball winners in their forwards. In contrast, Dave Conway and Keiron Garside were determined in the attack and created numerous space for wing Dennis Faries and fullback Gavin Corcoran, scoring the first try from 40 metres out. Corcoran actually contributed 13 of his team's points with an additional conversion and two penalties. Conway got the second try early in the second half.
SLIPPING AWAY -- Weary Renegades suffered one of their worst defeats in years on Sunday when Mariners gained the upper hand during an 18-0 shutout triumph.
