Marshall gains all-east honours
women's golf team on the weekend as the school finished a formidable seventh overall at the NCAA Championships at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Georgia.
Topping that off, Marshall was later named to the All-East Region team by the National Golf Coaches Association.
Marshall tied for 38th overall after breaking 80 in each of the four rounds with scores of 79, 76, 74 and 78 for a 15-over-par total of 307.
The Wake Forest team got off to a sluggish start after a rough opening round had them lodged in 13th place. But the team gained steadily from that point shooting the second-best score on the second day to jump six places into seventh spot and then tied for the best round on the third day with a school-record total of 293 to vault into fifth spot. Marshall fired a one-over-par 74 on the record-breaking day.
If not for hot rounds by Southern California and Furman on Sunday, Wake Forest would have maintained their fifth-place standing on the final day, but the two teams moved ahead with rounds of 300 and 301, respectively.
"If someone told me we would finish seventh before the tournament started, I would have gladly taken it because this is a young team,'' said head coach Dianne Dailey, who fielded one freshman other than Marshall and another sophomore.
"If it weren't for a couple of shots here and there, we would have been able to finish in the top five, and I think that would have been pretty amazing.
"I can't tell you how proud I am of this team,'' she added. "To be able to come back the way they did after that first round tells a lot about their character and heart. I think this is definitely something we can build on for next year.''
