Middleton shoots Scots to title
Barbados 0 By Nigel Henderson Defender David Middleton turned sharpshooter last night as Rangers carried off the International Youth Tournament title for the second time in three years at BAA Field last night.
It had to be something special to beat the imposing figure of Barbados goalkeeper Corey Spencer-Layne, later voted the tournament's top shot-stopper -- and it was, Middleton gliding in on the back post to meet Iain Russell's 53rd minute corner with a thumping volley which flew into the opposite corner of the net.
The goal lifted the Scots' confidence after an indifferent first half against a side that had beaten them in the opening game of the tournament. They began to assume control and the longer the game wore on the more it looked like there could only be one winner.
Time and again Russell, the impressive Kevin Morrison on the left flank and Darryl Duffy found space in and around the Barbados box as the Caribbean team, playing together outside their country for the first time, lost their shape.
But it might have been different had Barbados taken advantage of two golden opportunities in the opening minutes. Riviere Williams, the nippy striker who later shared the tournament's top goalscorer award with Bermuda's Raymond Beach, was heavily involved in both incidents.
First, with just seconds gone, he forced his way through a sleepy Rangers rearguard, creating an opening for Frederick Carter, who shot just over. Then with seven minutes on the clock, the ball broke fortuitously for him in the box, but he shot across the goal and wide.
And Rangers' lanky 14-year-old defender Richard Robb had to be alert to the danger when Williams again threatened to pounce on a loose ball.
At the other end Russell took the breath away with some excellent skill and close control on the right touchline to create a run at goal. But he had the air knocked from him and went down like a sack of potatoes after being cynically blocked by a Barbados defender.
Gary Brown and Duffy then both missed openings as Rangers began to find their feet a little.
Rangers coach John Chalmers was a picture of delight at the end, but generous in victory.
"I'm really pleased for the boys, '' he said. "I'm even more delighted than I was the first time we won the tournament. Considering the age of the boys, I'm really proud of them. But all credit to Barbados -- they fought all the way. Both teams served up a good game of football with one team on top and then the other.'' ON THE MOVE -- Bermuda goalscorer Raymond Beach swivels clear of two US players during last night's International Youth Tournament consolation final at BAA Field. The US won 2-1.
