Mionors sparks major upset of Hamilton Parish
Four goals by Desmond Minors tore the heart out of favourites Hamilton Parish to produce the only shock in the FA Cup elimination round yesterday at BAA field.
The Commercial Division team Robin Hood were never overawed by the reputation of their Second Division opponents -- who were just relegated from the First Division -- and methodically threw Parish out of top gear early by snatching the first goal with the game just 52 seconds old! While Minors, last season's top scorer in the Commercial Division, almost single-handedly demolished Parish, much of Robin Hood's success has to go to diminutive winger Ray Morrison who supplied the crosses for three of the headed goals by the lanky striker.
While the attack was spearheaded by the duo the defence was held together by centre-halves Colin McQueen and skipper Tim Perry.
Robin Hood led 2-0 at the break with their second goal coming after 34 minutes when Minors headed home from a Morrison cross.
The Commercial Divisioners threatened to blow Parish away early in the second half but Minors had his fine shot turned around the post by goal-keeper Cal Burgess. Then he followed up by putting a penalty wide of goal.
Parish, whose attack continued to be frustrated by some fine defensive work by Robin Hood, finally drew blood after 53 minutes when their hard-working striker Antwon Darrell blasted their only goal home from just inside the box.
They came into the game with more momentum afterwards but their hopes of staging a complete revival was rattled when Minors and Morrison teamed up again to put Robin Hood ahead 3-1 after 62 minutes with Minors completing his hat-trick.
That strike floored Parish once and for all and for the remainder of the game they lacked the fight and enthusiasm that they displayed when play restarted for the second half.
Minors got the fourth goal after 79 minutes when he this time headed home a cross by substitute Dave Upshall and then striker Peter Slater chipped home a beauty from close in to seal victory and set up a preliminary round meeting with fellow Commercial Division side KPMG next month.
DELIGHTED DES -- Robin Hood hero Desmond Minors shows his delight after scoring one of his four goals which sank Hamilton Parish yesterday.
