Oakland grab seven shot lead

Oakland, Maryland, surged from fourth place into a commanding seven shot lead after the second round of the Lobster Pot Pro-Am golf tournament at Castle Harbour yesterday.

Having trailed three joint leaders by one stroke after Monday's first round, Oakland took full advantage when the trio at the top all stumbled during their second round.

Oakland carded a net 123 to add to their opening day 124 for a combined total of 247.

And that left them seven clear of Tim Conley's Rosemont Country Club from Akron, Ohio, who after an opening score of 123 ballooned to 131 yesterday.

But the teams with which Rosemont shared the first day lead fared even worse.

D.J. Holland's Avila Golf and Country Club from Tampa, Florida, followed with a 132 while Woburn CC from Massachusetts, led by Paul Parajeckas, could only manage a 135 -- 12 shots higher than their opening day score.

With the final round of the 54-hole two-best-ball event scheduled for Friday, Oakland are in good position to take the net title.

The gross division, however, remains closer although Rosemont stretched their first day lead to four shots yesterday with a score of 143 for a total of 277.

Avila hold down second spot on 281 followed by Joe Carr's Bedrock GC on 282.

Bedrock carded the best gross total yesterday of 138.

Today attention turns to the Lobster Pot Pro-Am Charity Tournament in which invited local amateurs team up with the overseas pros.

America's Joan Hartnett and England's Michael De La Hunty teamed up to take a commanding three shot lead in the first round of the ninth annual Valentines Mixed Foursomes tournament at St. George's Golf Course yesterday.

Hartnett and De La Hunty fired a net 45 playing the Pinehurst system (alternate shots) which will be used throughout the 54-hole event.

In second place are Florida's Thomas and Ann Grayson on 48. Charles Hartnett of the US and Bermuda's Terri Lyn Calderon lead the gross division after carding a 66.

Play continues at Belmont today and returns to St. George's for the final round.
