PHC punished by Stoneham and Wainwright
Southampton 115-1 David Stoneham and Keith Wainwright both blasted half-centuries as Southampton got their 1995 campaign off to a flying start with a nine wicket mauling of PHC at Southampton Oval.
After Southampton had started shakily in their bid for PHC's total of 111, losing opening batsman Kwame Tucker -- caught and bowled by Charles Symons -- with just four runs on the board, Wainwright and Stoneham quickly went about righting the ship.
Bowlers were treated with disdain as the pair lashed out, putting on a superb power display for the meagre but enthusiastic crowd.
Wainwright in particular took it to the PHC attack, slamming two sixes and eight fours to end unbeaten on 60, while Stoneham's innings of 51 not out included seven fours.
Together the pair accounted for 111 and Wainwright ended the match in spectacular style when he straight drove Charles Symons for six onto South Shore Road.
Earlier PHC found themselves indebted to new signee Allen Richardson, who accounted for almost half their total.
Batting at number three, Richardson proved the anchor, scoring 54 in two hours, 25 minutes and frustrating the opposition. Richardson hit two sixes to go with six fours in his innings.
Still, he was powerless to their overall plight as his team-mates failed in their efforts and wickets crumbled all around.
Just two managed to reach double figures as opener William Minors scored 12 and Mark Smith mustered 13.
Olin Jones and Garry Williams did most of the bowling damage, each taking three wickets, with Jones returning figures of three-for-15 and Williams three-for-33.
Aiding in the bowling department were Gary Crofton and Quinton Burch who claimed two-for-14 and two-for-nine respectively.
