Police's defence rests behind bars

For the second straight week Police's bowlers failed to protect a big score as this time Devonshire Rec. left Police field with maximum points from a hard-fought victory, with eight balls remaining.

New signing Jason Lewis, left out of the team last weekend in the win over Western Stars, responded with his best knock of the season as he blasted nine fours in a knock of 72 off 69 balls to set up the victory.

After losing openers Donald Norford and Lloyd Morrison with just 25 runs on the board, captain Albert Steede and former skipper Anthony Amory turned the match around with an important third-wicket stand of 88. Steede scored 30 and Amory 59, which included seven fours and a six. Amory's 50 came off just 37 balls.

Both players departed in the space of five runs to leave Devonshire in some trouble at 118 for four. However, former Nationals team-mates Lewis and Mark Ray swung the pendulum back in Rec.'s favour with a stand of 106 in 62 minutes, which ended when Ray was bowled by Donovan Livingston for 35.

The match hung in the balance going right down to the last few overs with both teams sensing victory.

For the second straight week it was achieved for Rec. by John Ray who hit two fours off Roger Blades, one through mid-wicket off a no-ball and a lofted drive over Dwayne Leverock to the long-off boundary to clinch the victory.

Blades took two for 26 from 7.4 overs and Michael Jackman two for 63 from 10 overs. Tyrone Smith and Dennis Archer were the most economical Police bowlers, giving up 39 and 44, but with their 10 overs having already been bowled captain Archer had few other options.

Earlier Dwayne Leverock led the Police batting with 67, including six fours and two sixes while Blades hammered 64 not out off just 35 balls. He hit seven fours and three sixes.

Police had a bad start with just 11 runs on the board and three wickets already gone. However, new captain Archer led from the front with 54 as he and Tyrone Smith (34) put on 54 for the fifth wicket in taking the score from 74 to 128. The team's biggest stand was one worth 91 runs for the seventh wicket between Leverock and Blades.

John Ray led the Devonshire bowlers with three for 38 off 10 overs. Erskine Smith was expensive in his four overs, which cost 40 runs though he did claim two wickets.

Flatts 252 St. David's 222 Opening batsman Andrew Richardson hammered 97 and Floyd Smith took four for 40 to help Flatts defeat St. David's by 30 runs at Devonshire Rec. field.

Richardson lost Kent Todd (one) with just six runs scored, but a second-wicket stand of 72 between Richardson and Troy Dean (26) put Flatts in a good position.

With Richardson battling on and with further good contributions from Gerald Sims (27), Troy Bean (24) and Sherwin Jones (20), Flatts managed to reach a formidable total. Richardson stroked seven fours and four sixes.

Herbie Bascome was the pick of the St. David's bowlers with three for 43 while Dale Fox had two for 21 and Reginald Pitcher had two for 36.

St. David's had a promising start when openers Reginald Pitcher (37) and Allan Richardson (11) put on 51. They lost four wickets before the score reached 65, but good middle-order batting by Delby Borden (43) and Bascome (53) restored stability.

However, in the end, Flatts' bowlers prevailed and pulled the team through.

Aaron Woolridge assisted Smith with three for 35 and Troy Dean had two for 44.
