Scots, Irish triumph again

Denmark 190 Ayaz Gul and Euan Stubbs feasted on the Denmark bowling as Scotland made it two wins out of two with this comfortable 93-run International Youth Tournament triumph at Wellington Oval yesterday.

Gul, who has played first class cricket in Pakistan, came close to the first century of the tournament before falling for 93, an innings which included 10 fours and four sixes.

After Denmark's David Christiansen removed openers Fraser Watts and Greg Butchart in his third and fourth overs to leave Scotland in early trouble at 27-2, Gul and Alan Speirs (46) turned the innings around with a third wicket stand of 140 in just 24 overs.

Two quick wickets came after the breakthrough to make it 178-5 after 33 overs but that was to be the last success for the Denmark bowlers as Stubbs took over and dominated an unbeaten sixth wicket stand of 105 in 17 overs with John Blain.

Stubbs finished on 69 not out with six fours and two sixes while Blain was unbeaten on 29.

Christiansen, two for 20 after his first seven over spell, finished with two for 43 from 10 overs while Peter Thomsen returned two for 57 off 10.

Thompson, who spends his summers playing in Kenya and is rated as one of the team's best batsmen, showed why with a knock of 69 in Denmark's reply. He hit eight fours and four sixes in 86 minutes at the crease. Opener Andy Lambert scored 24 and Amjad Khan 34.

The Scotland wickets were shared around with opener Blain taking two for 38, off-spinner B.Mitchinson two for 28 and Gul two for 20.

Ireland 211 Canada 157 After a brief scare, Ireland picked up important wickets in the Canadian middle-order at St. David's to complete a 54-run win, their second of the tournament.

Canada needed 100 for victory with 15 overs remaining when Ireland stepped up their efforts. They snapped up three wickets in the space of four runs to peg Canada back and eventually clinch victory in the day's closest match.

Ireland passed 200 for the second straight day, thanks this time to David Finlay's 52, 39 from number three bat Ed Joyce, 35 from Andrew Cousins and 28 from opener Joe Morrissey.

Captain Shruti Pal Singh claimed five for 13 from nine overs of left-arm spin while Ruwan Fonseka took two for 22.

High man for Canada was number four batsman Zubin Surkari with 36 in almost two hours before being last out while opener Mark Moosaie scored 31 and Ashish Bagai 26. They added 59 for the second wicket after Aditya Dhekney was dismissed first ball of the innings by Dwaynne McGerrigle.

Joyce claimed three for 44 and captain Joe Clinton two for 19.

Today's matches see Scotland taking on Bermuda at Nationals, Denmark playing England at Devonshire Rec. and Canada going up against Holland at St. John's Field. Ireland enjoy a rest day.
