Smith hat-trick lifts Vasco

Clay Smith scored a hat-trick as Vasco saw off lower league opposition at Police Field yesterday, but the outcome was never certain until Smith notched his second 12 minutes from time.

That was not to say that Prospect would have particularly deserved a replay, showing almost absolutely no inspiration up front and barely troubling Vasco goalkeeper Timmy Figureido.

On one occasion Figureido seemed to get so bored with proceedings that he ventured outside his area for a little dribble, got caught in possession by Philip Bailey and was lucky to see Bailey's shot towards the empty goal go embarrassingly wide.

That would have tied things up a minute before the end of a first half which Vasco completely dominated without capitalising on an abundance of opportunities.

Their opener, after a quarter of an hour, came when Smith bent a left footed shot round the wall and beyond Kuhn Evans in the Prospect goal.

It needed something special to beat the keeper, who, along with Vasco's wasteful forwards, kept Prospect in the game.

Indeed, Keith Jennings should have opened Vasco's account in the eighth minute but was denied by Evans after he broke through. And Smith nearly had a second after 17 minutes, but Evans dived excellently to keep out his flick header.

Dwight Basden blasted into the side netting on the half hour as Evans narrowed the angle and then the goalkeeper reacted brilliantly to block Kumar Smith's effort from eight yards with his knees.

Basden smashed another good effort into the side netting after 55 minutes as Vasco found alarming room down Prospect's flanks.

The Police side sent on Andrew Bissell up front for David Geraghty and he looked more likely to give the underworked Vasco rearguard cause for concern.

But it was Smith who struck again, after Jennings had missed two more good chances, shooting low past Evans when allowed space on the edge of the box.

Five minutes later, in the 83rd minute, Smith completed his hat-trick with an unchallenged downward header from Sinclair Gibbons' cross.

Robin Hood 0 MR Onions 1 A kit mix-up nearly put the kybosh on this clash of expat sides.

With minutes to kick-off the Onions kit was still in St. George's -- which was just as well as it would have clashed with the Hood's identical all blue outfit.

So MR Onions warmed up in underpants and a hastily borrowed kit from Somerset Eagles before Hood sportingly lent them spare shorts.

However, it was Hood who were the more ragged as Onions took the game to them with wing-back Matt Peary revelling in the wide open spaces of White Hill Field.

He also came close to scoring after the ball fell to him after a slip by a home defender but Peary's side-footed effort went just wide.

Aerial power was always likely to be a factor in this Battle of Britain and so it proved as Alan Mooney latched on to Paul Towlson's knock down but the strike went the wrong side of the post.

Three minutes later, Towlson's fierce downward header was cleared off the line. Onions began the second half brightly with Gary Wilson's 25-yarder being tipped over by keeper Phil Bolton.

But chances were few with one goal always likely to decide it. And that opportunity fell to Onions striker Keith Donald who jabbed the ball home from close range after Bolton had missed a high cross and Hood had failed to clear.

Jar McCabe could have equalised in the 73rd minute after turning Chris Fleming but a fine save by Andy Jekyll from point blank range kept in form Onions in the next round despite Hood hitting the bar in the 51st minute.

Robin Hood: P.Bolton, C.McQueen, D.Scott, S.Pomparey, R.Janos, P.Scope (B.Endgan 87 mins), S.Turner (J.Peach, 75 mins), A.Mooney (D.Thomas, 45 mins), P.Towlson, D.Smyth, J.McCabe.

Lobster Pot 6 Exiles 2 Lobster Pot scored four goals in the second half to put this game out of the reach of Exiles in an all-Commercial League contest at St. John's Field.

After matching their opponents for the first half, which ended 2-1 in favour of Pot, Exiles fell apart when they were forced to battle on with nine players when Michael Trott became the second player to be given his marching orders in the 64th minute.

Cavon Trott had gone after only 20 minutes of the game.

Pot also had a player red carded, referee Irven Simmons sending off Jim McLaren after 77 minutes.

Their first half goals came from McLaren after six minutes and veteran Troy Berkeley who limped off with a hamstring injury for good after scoring in the 34th.

Treadwell Walker blasted home a free kick for Exiles after 42 minutes.

Pot stretched their lead to 3-1 after 54 minutes through McLaren but, inspired by the hard-working Alan Johnson, Exiles forged back and it was Johnson who scored to make it 3-2 after 55 minutes.

With centrebacks Christian Thomas and Alan Smith marshalling the defence, Pot held firm and were able to take complete control of the proceedings when Peter Jinks made it 4-2 after 65 minutes from the penalty spot.

They added two more goals through Adrian White after 72 minutes and Alan Turner after 80 minutes.
