Softball tourists play Select

third time for an invitational tournament, playing two matches, last night and tonight (8.00), against the Bermuda national women's select at Bernard Park.

Bermuda Amateur Softball Association see the matches as vital as they try to revive interest in the sport which has declined over recent years.

"We're trying to increase youth interest which is waning,'' said BASA general secretary Carla Zuill who also plays third base for the national team.

"Hopefully this coming season we can see a greater youth interest.'' Normally, Spellman Academy also visit at the same time as Fontbonne and double-headers are played. But they couldn't make the trip this year.

The Bermuda national team is coached by Anthony Mouchette and Debra Phillips.

Among those on the squad are outfielders Thea Furbert and Daun Leverock, Cherie Manders at second base, shortstop Sakena Clarke, catcher Lawanda Trott and Stacy Hill, who is recognised as the Island's premier pitcher.

Preceding tonight's action will be a male and female home run derby, starting at 6.00 and 6.30. Admission is free.
