Swim trio join Games qualifiers

Trevor Nelson made the standard in three races -- the boys 15/17 200 metres breaststroke, 100 metres breaststroke and the 100 metres freestyle --

Saturday's BASA Spring meet.

Trevor Nelson made the standard in three races -- the boys 15/17 200 metres breaststroke, 100 metres breaststroke and the 100 metres freestyle -- while Chris King qualified in the 13/14 boys 100 metres breaststroke and Robin Massey in the 13/14 boys 50 metres freestyle.

Their performances brought the total number of Games qualifiers to 14.

However, Games' rules stipulate that only the two fastest swimmers in each stroke can compete, and in the boys 13/14 50 metres freestyle, already five have achieved the standard.

Meanwhile, Saturday's meet saw a new age group record set by Graham Smith of Harbour Club in the boys 13/14 200m breaststroke with a time of two minutes 39.25 seconds.

Meet co-ordinator Gill Farge noted that the quality of swimming was "outstanding''.

The next and final meet for qualifying for Cuba will be the Bermuda National Championships to be held on June 13-15.

"Several top quality swimmers are coming in from overseas to compete, which will be a wonderful opportunity to extend our swimmers,'' added Farge.

Well-known internationals, Owen von Richter (freestyle and individual medley) from Canada, and Tom Fuke (breaststroke), together with top swimmers from the Brevard team in Florida will be flying in for the championships.

Von Richter has competed in and won medals at the Commonwealth Games and the PanAtlantic Games.

SPLASHING OUT -- Trevor Nelson qualified for the upcoming CCCan Games in Cuba with a victory treble at the BASA pool.
