Zarah DeSilva and Jevon Whitter, both playing in the under-14 division, suffered comprehensive first round defeats in an event which annually attracts the leading young players from around the world.

Both Steffi Graf and Andre Agassi are former winners.

DeSilva went down 6-1, 6-1 to Finland's Mariana Laasaren while Whitter took a 6-0, 6-0 drubbing at the hands of Murat Inoyatou of Uzbekhistan.

In yesterday's first round of the consolation, DeSilva was drawn against Czech player Alexandra Schunk while Whitter was due to play Canada's Matthew Guberco.
