Town lights give BFA new option

Stars Sports Club have improved their floodlights.

Concerns over the quality of the lighting at the ground, home of Premier Division team Dandy Town, resulted in Bermuda Football Association steering away from night matches since the second half of last season.

This season no night games have yet been played at St. John's field, causing Town to reschedule three home matches which originally were to have been played under lights.

But now the problem has been rectified and a women's double-header is slated for tonight, with Wolves Girls playing Rude Girls at 7.00 and Dandy Stars taking on new team Little Venice Rookies at 9.00.

"We went over to St. John's Field and made a visual inspection, with the chairman of the Referees' Committee of the BFA and the president of the Referees' Association,'' said BFA General Secretary David Sabir.

"It was clear that the floodlights have been improved tremendously and we must give a lot of credit to Western Stars and Dandy Town for that.

"We commend them and recognise they have gone to great expense to get their field upgraded and make it available as a night field again.

"It will give us options when we are scheduling fixtures and take the pressure off the other night fields.'' New Western Stars president, Arnold Manders, explained that two poles which were positioned on the southern boundary of the cricket field had been brought forward. Other work has also been done on the lights.

"We didn't have the finances before and we lost quite a bit of money getting it done,'' said Manders, without revealing the cost absorbed by the club itself.

"We had two centre poles back beyond the cricket field and they felt they would be better served if we brought them in. But because of high winds and rain we couldn't get the Belco guys to come and spot them, that's the only problem we had.'' The quality of the lights at all of Bermuda's club grounds have come under scrutiny. PHC closed their ground two years ago when they decided to replace their aging lights rather than take on the expense of repairing them.

"Our lights are not as bad as anyone else's,'' Manders insisted. "As a matter of fact I've been to games at Somerset, BAA and (Devonshire) Rec. and ours are no worse and probably better.'' Dandy Town have two more home matches scheduled under lights before the end of the season, including next Saturday when they play Wolves.
