Town's fate rests in Red Devils' hands
maximum points from three matches, face elimination from the Martonmere Cup tonight at PHC Stadium.
Town will not be playing, having already played their two round-robin matches, but they will be relying on North Village to help them advance to the semifinals next week.
Town, having lost to Village and drawn with Devonshire Colts, are hoping Village beat Colts in the opening match at 7 p.m. For any other result will assure that Village and Colts advance to the semifinals.
The same applies in the 9 p.m. match where champions Somerset need just a draw to advance. However, in this case, PHC, who stand to lose from such a result, at least have their fate in their own hands.
The Zebras are hoping to capitalise on home advantage as they bid to boost a sluggish start to the season. Twice this season in the league their usually solid defence has conceded four goals, including this past weekend when Somerset edged by them 4-3.
Certainly another goal-filled match would be welcomed by the crowd but both teams would be happy to snatch victory on the only goal of the game. While Somerset will keep alive their hopes of defending their title, the Zebras know that only a win will keep them in the competition. Boulevard, who are idle tonight, have clinched the only semifinal spot so far.
The veteran Sammy Swan, Sheridan Ming and young winger Dave Wolffe, their summer signing from North Village, will lead PHC's quest for goals. Wolffe is their top scorer so far with three goals.
Somerset striker Rodney Bascome celebrated his return to their line-up with two goals on Sunday against the Zebras, after spending a couple of games on the bench, and he will be a main threat for the Zebras defence.
A draw would satisfy both Colts and Village in tonight's opening clash, though current form gives the edge to the Red Devils. Both teams lost on the weekend, the first for previously unbeaten Village, while Colts are still seeking their first win of the new season.
