The swim, from Trunk Island in Harrington Sound to Palmetto Bay, has annually attracted hundreds of swimmers, both local and from overseas.

However, Robin Stubbs of the Triangle Swim Club who organise the event, said they had been left with no option but to call off Sunday's race because of construction work around what was formerly the Palmetto Bay Hotel.

Stubbs noted there were no longer facilities for those who wanted to watch the event or for those competing, but she said it was hoped the swim would resume next year.
