Victory puts Walsall on brink of promotion

English Second Division, after two results on Tuesday night worked in the Saddlers' favour to enable them to move into second place.

Walsall won 2-1 away to Lightbourne's former team Scarborough, though the Bermudian did not add to his 27 goals for the season. Their main rivals for the second automatic promotion spot, Chesterfield, missed their chance to seal promotion when they lost at home to the division winners Carlisle.

Now, with a two point advantage over Chesterfield and with a superior goal difference, Walsall need just a point tonight away to fourth placed Bury in their final match to be certain of promotion outright. Chesterfield close out their season at home to Colchester on Saturday while Bury's final match is at home to Darlington.

If Walsall gain outright promotion tonight with at least a point, the four teams involved in the play-offs will be Chesterfield, Bury, Preston and Mansfield.
