Village proved Vasco with strongest challenge yet

the previous Sunday, Vasco face an even stiffer challenge tomorrow when they entertain league leaders North Village in the day's top game at PHC.

To make matters worse, they may have to go without the services of stalwart defender Donovan Livingston, reportedly out with a broken arm, as well as midfielder Paul Towlson, who was forced out of the aforementioned match because of a knee injury.

Nevertheless, coach Danny Seymour's men have impressed somewhat during the early going and certainly have shown the ability to score goals -- six in two matches -- second only to Village in that department. The strike partnership of Ricky Mallory and Irving Burgess combining for half of the total amount.

Mallory caused particular trouble to Colts when he picked up balls deep before proceeding to blow past players utilising his pace. And Village may be vulnerable in defence, as cracks were obvious in that area during Somerset's 4-2 trouncing of them on Thursday night in the Futuro Cup.

However, the Red Devils cannot be short-changed. They carry a perfect league record into the match, have experience in both midfield and attack, have blended well and appear one of the few sides not lost in extended slumber after the summer break.

Meanwhile, Dandy Town, the only other team unbeaten and untied, find their status in jeopardy as they travel to the hostile confines of Frog Lane to meet Devonshire Colts, hungry for their first win of the season.

Forward Craig Smith and his powerful left boot was welcomed back to the fold last weekend and may get the starting nod this time around. Ellington Weldon should be one of his partners up front, but the other is likely a toss-up between Quincy Aberdeen and Keishon Smith.

Defence is a worry though, as the foursome of Leonard Hypolite, Keenan Burchall, Jahmal Samuels and sweeper Derek Wright have been mediocre at best.

Wright's casual approach to his position as the penultimate man in defence has caused more than a few harrowing moments and coach Lorenzo Symonds must seek to have urgency restored if the young Colts are to fulfill the promise previewed last season.

Defending league champions Somerset, impressive against Village, find themselves at home to arch rivals PHC in another intriguing clash.

The Zebras return to full strength as they have back the talents of Kenny Mills, Sheridan Ming and Anthony Stovell to balance with the youthful talents that have been overmatched at times thus far.

Somerset have yet to show the form that won them three trophies in 1992-93, but can explode at any time and the thought of beating PHC may be the spark to ignite the fire.

Other matches see Boulevard tackling Southampton at St. David's, while two side due to battle to stave off relegation, St. George's and St. David's, are pitted against each other at Wellington Oval.

In the Daihatsu Second Division, leaders Devonshire Cougars have the day off, giving others a chance to make up ground...at least for the time being.

Second place Wolves meet Somerset Eagles at Devonshire Rec., Social Club play Prospect at PHC, Hamilton Parish entertain BAA at Wellington Oval and Port Royal take on Paget at White Hill.
