Wanderers turn back Extros

Division Group A championship on Saturday when they eliminated Spinning Wheel from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 3-1 victory.

After a scoreless first half, Wheel jolted the two-time defending champs with a strike from Cecil Robinson, but as has been the case in the past the Wanderers' determination won out as they came back late.

Steve Garrett, Alistair Smith and Eric Jones hit the goals that enabled them to win and move two points clear at the top on eight points. Wheel dropped to third behind KPMG Peat Marwick, but trail the latter by goal difference.

KPMG enhanced themselves with a hard-fought 2-1 triumph over lowly Somerset Extros at the west end.

Level at the half, KPMG found the slow-footed, but experienced Extros more than a handful. However, the visitors' superior fitness finally emerged as a factor late and they were able to scrape through.

Neil Clemens and Troy Custodio were the marksmen for KPMG, while Mel Roberts tallied for the west-enders.

It took four matches, but cellar dwellers Exiles finally notched their first league score of the season. Alas, it was not enough to avert a fourth consecutive defeat -- a 5-1 pummelling by Robin Hood.

Leading 3-0 at the half through two converted penalties by Paul Hawkesworth within the space of a minute and a fine header by Tim Perry, Hood heaped further misery in the second half with Des Minors supplying two more goals.

Island Rangers got their first point of the year as a result of a 1-1 draw against Forties.

As had become custom for the men from Dockyard they went ahead early and then allowed their opponents back in to equalise.

Troy Berkeley scored for Rangers, taking advantage of a poor back-pass and nipping in to beat the goalkeeper, while Forties' centre-back Peter Morgan struck with a header following a corner in the second half.

Group B leaders Devonshire Colts All-Stars had a scare when they were nearly done in by Park United.

All-Stars prevailed 2-1 based on scores from James Tweed, following up his own penalty that was saved, and Larry Benjamin. Sinclair Trott had provided Park with a half-time lead from the penalty spot.

A barn-burner occurred between Genesis and Fire Services with the result not settled until the dying stages of the match.

Two goals from Denton Leader and a solo effort from Ernest McCallan had staked Genesis to what appeared a comfortable 3-1 lead at the half.

However, a sudden burst by Services' Troy Furbert, who scored a hat-trick, levelled the score at 3-3 and it was left to Shannon Burchall to net the winner with time running out, giving Genesis a 4-3 victory.

Remaining matches saw North Village Rams and Lobster Pot draw 1-1. Cal Raynor was on target for St. George's and Tony Smith for Lobster Pot.

North Village Rams got their first win, a 3-0 thumping of new boys Valley as Ralph Bean scored twice and Wendell Baxter once.

Among the Alliance Division, Group A leaders North Village lost their perfect record after being held 4-4 by Devonshire Colts.

Village led 2-0 at the half, but Colts came back as Quincey Aberdeen and Darren Smith each scored twice.

Ricky Hill likewise struck the net on two occasions and was helped by one each through Sherritt Hewey and Ramon Douglas.

St. George's handed out the biggest hammering when they blasted Hamilton Parish 9-1 with Carlos Greaves scoring four.

Kuma Smith, Chae and Melvin Simmons and Del Tyrell (two) completed the rout.

Jermaine Outerbridge scored for Parish.

In other matches, Dandy Town defeated Somerset 4-1 on goals from Darren Simons (two) and Jeff Butterfield -- Clifton Anderson scored for Somerset -- Boulevard blasted St. David's 6-0, Prospect defeated Somerset Eagles 5-2 and goals from Mike Williams and Webster Mills enabled Southampton to squeak by Devonshire Cougars 2-1.

GOAL HERO -- Des Minors in action for Robin Hood against Exiles on Saturday.

Minors scored twice in a 5-1 win at Shelly Bay field.
