Williams gives Rangers the edge

Southampton 151-3 Southampton bounced back from last week's shock defeat at the hands of Devonshire Rec to surge into the semi-finals of the Knockout Cup with a seven wicket demolition of PHC at the Oval yesterday.

Gary Williams continued his fine run of form with the ball, Olin Jones flashed a quick half-century, while captain Janeiro Tucker literally stepped off the plane onto the pitch to give a virtuoso all-round performance.

But first up was Williams who, looking to impress the Bermuda selectors ahead of the upcoming Caribbean and ICC tours, bagged four wickets and could have had more if a few chances had not been put down in the slips during a lively first spell.

Still, the paceman accounted for PHC dangerman Sheridan Ming, removing the opener for 13 as PHC slumped to 22 for two.

The visitors, though, recovered as Mark Smith (43) and Cal Waldron (50) frustrated the home side with a 106-run third wicket stand, moving the total to 128 before Waldron fell to Tucker.

And as Tucker struck again to dismiss Smith after just one more run had been added the die was cast.

Williams came back for a second spell, mowing through the late order as PHC capitulated for 147.

"It was a good haul, everything's been coming together for the last month and I've really been bending my back and the wickets are coming,'' said Williams, anxious to return to the international scene.

"The wicket today was pretty quick and I was able to find a spot and take advantage of it.

"My first spell I got a few edges and some dropped catches in slips but I came back for my second spell and cleared out the tail like a good pace bowler is supposed to.'' Tucker aided in the bowling department with three for 31, while Jones took two for 19.

Meanwhile, Southampton were never in trouble chasing such a meagre total, despite losing opener Keith Wainwright (one) with the score just 10.

Jones went on a boundary tear, smashing 13 fours in his unbeaten knock of 68 at number two.

New signing David Ferreira, who toured Bermuda earlier this year as a member of Eton College's cricket squad, likewise attacked the PHC bowlers with savage intentions, hitting five fours in his 23 before being caught behind by Antoine Green.

It was then left to Tucker (22 not out) and Jones to shepherd Southampton through to victory.

Cleveland 166 Somerset CC 170-7 Jacoby Robinson and Leon Place combined to snatch seven wickets between them to lead Somerset to a three-wicket triumph over Cleveland at Somerset.

Robinson was the chief wicket-taker with four for 62 off 10 overs while Place had three for 32 off nine overs with two maidens.

Cleveland reached a respectable total with Anthony Bascome stroking a brisk 44, including five fours and three sixes, while Johnny Richardson followed with 29, Carlton Smith 19 and Carlos Smith 13.

In response, Somerset reached their winning target thanks to a fine 41 by Place with Shaun Roberts contributing 30, Francis Richardson 23 not out and opening bat Tony Cheeseman 17.

B.Gibbons led Cleveland's bowlers with three for 39 off seven overs.

Cal Waldron: half-century for PHC in a losing effort against Southampton Rangers.
