Hopwood earns golf scholarship

Young Bermuda golfer Joshua Hopwood has signed on to attend North Greenville University in Tigerville, South Carolina next fall on a partial golf scholarship.

Hopwood was among seven seniors at Heritage Academy who announced their plans at an early NCAA early signing ceremony last week on the academy's campus.

Other students honoured on the day were Courtney Collett, former European Young Masters under 16s and National American Championship winner Stanislas Gautier, Minami Levonowich, Molly O'Koniewski, Ri Hyang Park, and Alexandru Pasareanu.

Hopwood, who lives in Warwick, has previously trained at the Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy and has been at Heritage Academy for two years.

He will be a member of the Crusaders men's golf team under head coach Jeff Pittillo.

In 2006/07, Hopwood was the number one ranked player of the year by Bermuda Junior Golf Association, while also being ranked second in the Tarheel Youth Golf Association this past summer.

Collett will receive an athletic scholarship to attend Miami University in Oxford, Ohio beginning next fall for swimming where she has been as high as 12th in the country in her disciplines.

She has been ranked as high as 12th in the nation.

Gautier, from France, was awarded a full scholarship to attend Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona next fall. Along with his numerous championships, he also placed in the top three in France for the Under 18s and played in the junior European Ryder Cup.

Levonowich received a full scholarship to attend Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Georgia next fall and received the Golfweek Junior Player of the Week award in both 2009 and 2010 and is also a Future Collegians World Tour 3rd Team All-American;

O'Koniewski received a full scholarship in tennis to the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia beginning next fall. She has been ranked as high as 13th in the nation and most recently was awarded the 2010 Bill Ozaki Southern Sportsmanship Award through by the USTA southern section.

Park, from Shizuoka, Japan, received a full scholarship to attend the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida next fall.

She recently placed second at the Golfweek Invitational tournament in Kissimmee, Florida. Rika plans to pursue a sports management degree in college.

Pasareanu received an athletic scholarship to attend Northwestern University in Evanston, Ilinois.

He was the Canadian national champion for the 12 and under division, and was ranked fourth in the nation in the 14 and under division.

Most recently, the International Tennis Federation has ranked him as high as 600.
