Rising star Jasmin set for Bermuda debut

Jasmin Johansen: The US-based football player will make her first appearance for North Village tomorrow.

Teenage college football star Jasmin Johansen says she is excited and grateful to finally have the opportunity to play a game in Bermuda – even though she is already a medal-winner for the national women's team.

It will be the first opportunity for most Bermudians to see the youngster perform. Her talents and goalscoring prowess have made headlines in the USA, where she lives, and were enough to spark the interest of the Bermuda national team who selected her after a trial to play in the Island Games where she was part of the women's squad that came away with bronze medals last year.

After arriving on-Island this week for a five-day stay, Johansen, 19, said she felt privileged to be able to finally have the opportunity to play in Bermuda and was looking forward to letting people see her in action. She will play for North Village women's team against Prospect tomorrow at Police Field (kick-off noon).

The US-born teenager has Bermudian parents and her father, William, is a former North Village player.

Johansen made a name for herself by becoming the all-time top football points scorer at Woodward School for Girls in Quincy, near Boston, when she accumulated 168 points, including 104 goals, over a four-year spell – something no other player at the school had achieved in its 112-year history.

The school 'retired' her No. 5 jersey to mark her accomplishment.

Johansen is now in her second year at Spelman College in Atlanta, and by coincidence was given the No. 5 jersey for the collegiate team.

Rules prevented Johansen from making her Island debut in an FA Cup game last year. But by playing a league match tomorrow, she will now be eligible for FA Cup games in 2009 should she in Bermuda at the right time and is selected for the team.
