Romaine: Outsiders the key to Bay win

Bailey's Bay have the batting power to chase down any total, vice-captain Irving Romaine has warned Eastern Counties favourites St.David's.

By drafting in Cup Match legend Charlie Marshall as one of three guest players, Bay have pulled off a major coup as they strive to claw the coveted crown from their rivals at home tomorrow.

And Romaine believes the dangerous Marshall will be even more determined to put St.David's attack to the sword after bowing out of Cup Match with a whimper when he got out for a golden duck.

Marshall, who started his illustrious career at Bay, joins Somerset's Jermaine Warner and, fellow batsman, Young Men's Social Club's Jahmiko Marshall as the challengers' guest players.

"The three guest players have paid their dues and have been training with us and they've got picked, they've deserved it," said former national team captain Romaine.

"Bailey's Bay is Charlie's home club, that's where he started.

"His last big game in Cup Match didn't finish the way he wanted, so we're expecting big things from Charlie."

Although, on paper at least, Bay's bowling attack appears to lack any real venom, Romaine is convinced their trio of spinners can grind down the free scoring St.David's batsman and insists his team possesses enough ammunition to shoot down even the heftiest of batting totals.

"We have a very good chance, we have a very strong team and we're out to take the cup from St.David's," he said.

"They could be a little over confident, it happened with us, complacency sets in and then there's always a chance.

"We've picked a team we can think can do the job. We have a good spin attack and Stephen Outerbridge is going to have to bowl a few and maybe Charlie will probably also bowl."

Romaine believes winning the toss could be crucial to the outcome of clash and said Bay hoped to send St.David's into bat.

"The real deal is if we bat second we can chase down anything St.David's post," he said.

"The toss will be crucial, if we win we will put St. David's in, that's why we have picked the team we have."

In the past Bay have chosen not to select guest players so to help strengthen their league team, but Romaine reckons it was important to open their doors to 'outsiders' in their bid to reclaim the Counties cup.

"When Stephen Outerbridge was captain the year before last he made a statement that he wouldn't take any outsiders," he said.

"We decided that we would play our league team to strengthen the club's programme and it worked and we had a good season, but the new guys we've brought in should make an impact.

He added: "The last time we won the Eastern Counties I was captain, but then we lost it to St.David's about four years ago and they've had it ever since. Hopefully that will change."
