Zebras still in the dark
Stadium will be switched to another venue because of ongoing light problems at the Warwick ground.
PHC Zebras kick their campaign off with a match against Devonshire Cougars while Hamilton Parish meet Somerset Eagles in the Second Division fixture.
But yesterday PHC president Doronda Smith confirmed that the light problems, which date back to February when a match between Vasco and Dandy Town was abandoned, have still not been corrected. They failed again recently and now club officials are weighing up the cost of replacing the whole system.
"That's what we're considering right now,'' said Smith yesterday. "It is more serious than we thought. The lights are 20-plus years old and a lot has gone wrong with them.
"We had been working on them and we thought we had them ready for the season but they blew again. We're trying to fix them but we're trying to contemplate whether we want to put good money into something bad or go with a whole new system and that's what we're trying to decide.'' The unavailability of both Devonshire Rec. and Somerset -- the Rec. are having a perimeter wall built and Somerset also have light problems -- meant that only BAA Field has been available for night matches so far.
However, it is anticipated that Somerset will be in use by this weekend.
The Trojans have a home game on Friday night against fellow promoted team Hotels, while Devonshire Rec's first night match is next Friday when the Cougars host the Trojans and Wolves meet Hamilton Parish in a Second Division encounter.
As the home ground of Vasco also, PHC Stadium is used frequently and next Saturday, October 4, another First Division match has been scheduled there between Vasco and Boulevard. That match, too, is now likely to be rescheduled.
