No chance for a fair race, says Wright

Veteran Laser sailor Brett Wright said he'd "never sail here again" and fellow competitor Sara Lane Adderley suggested it was time the Island Games put on a separate regatta for women.

And their criticism came after Bermuda had snatched the gold medal!

Wright and his Laser team-mates proved the most consistent in a total fleet of around 50 throughout the week, but he believed the ever-changing conditions torpedoed any chance they had of collecting individual medals.

Wright placed sixth in the Laser Standard Rig class and Malcolm Smith just missed out on the bronze, placing fourth, while in the Laser Radial Rig class, Rockal Evans finished on a high with a second and a third on the last day to place fourth and Adderley, starting the day in third, dropped to fifth after a ninth and a fifth-place finish.

It was the shifty conditions in Aland's Eastern Harbour surrounded by land that sparked some heated arguments.

"We're happy to win the team gold," said Wright. "Going into Friday, there was only a slight possibility of getting a silver, Sara Lane being the closest to getting an individual medal and we just decided we had to get the team event and that's all we were worried about.

"Everybody's goal was to try to do the best racing they could because the conditions were so shifty and we simply had to go out and race as well as we could. You couldn't really match-race anybody out there, it was just too difficult.

"Conditions changed radically. It's a random place to sail, it's a beautiful island but I'd never come here to sail again.

"The conditions were just unfair . . . I was leading a race and within 30 seconds I was second last. And I was in a good position where I should never have dropped back.
