Star coach to work with sprinters

UK coach Tony Lester

World renowned sprint coach Tony Lester will be putting some of the Island's top young athletes through their paces when he arrives in Bermuda for a two-day workshop next week.

Lester has worked with star quality UK athletes such as Olympic champions Denise Lewis and Marlon Devonish as well as Olympic silver medallist Roger Black during his decorated career.

During his whirlwind visit, Lester will also meet with sprint hopeful Tre Houston to discuss a possible move to Europe where he would train and compete under the esteemed coach.

Bermuda Track and Field (BTFA) president Donna Watson met Lester, a Great Britain 4X100 relay coach, at the World Championships in Berlin last summer where she discussed the possibility of Lester and Houston teaming up.

She said around 65 people had already signed up for Lester's workshop.

As well as helping Bermuda's young sprinters Lester, who also works with international rugby players like England's Ugo Monye, will share his vast knowledge with the BTFA coaches during his trip.

"We have had a great response to this workshop and approximately 65 people have registered," said Watson. "These people consist of athletes (road and track), coaches, parents and teachers.

"Everything is ready and Tony is anxious to come here and we are excited about it also. He will be meeting with Tre Houston and his father to discuss the opportunities that will be available to Tre."

The workshop will take place at the National Sports Centre's North Field pavilion on Saturday, November 28 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and on Sunday, November 29 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m.

This weekend will mark the last cross country event in this season's series. It will be held at the Arboretum at 8.30 a.m.

"This is the last event in the series and there are a few of the age groups where this event will decide the winner in that category," added Watson.

The eventual winner has to have competed in at least three of the five cross country events to be eligible.
