Unbeaten Teachers stay top of the class
Teachers remain the only unbeaten side on the Island after last weekend's round of matches at Malabar.
The men in red go into the two-week break top of the table after beating Police 24-10. Renegades, meanwhile, remain second after a hard-fought win over Mariners.
Police went into the game looking for their first win of the season, and played the better rugby in an uncompromising first half, eventually going ahead through a Tom Edwards try.
The new-look backline of David Pringle and Durnferd Davies caused havoc among the Teachers' defence but were unable to extend the Police lead and with the Teachers pack gradually asserting itself more and more on the game, Greg Fraser eventually dragged the league leaders level with a well taken try.
At 5-5 at half-time the game was delicately poised, and for a while it seemed as if Police might take something from the game.
The two sides swapped tries in the second half with Henry Paddison and Warren Bundy scoring for Teachers and Police respectively, but Shauntino Simons edged Teachers ahead after knocking over the conversion.
With 10 minutes to go Police were still in the game, but tired, and further tries from Chris Way and Bobby Hurdle wrapped up the win for Teachers.
Renegades kept up their pursuit of Teachers at the top of the table in a predictably physical battle with Mariners.
In a tight first half both teams enjoyed good spells of possession, with Mariners eventually making the breakthrough when Steve Husbands took advantage of some weak Renegades tackling to score the game's opening try.
As the half wore on Renegades began to get a foothold in the game with some strong forward play, and Tom Kelly eventually barged over to pull his side level. Neil MacGuinness kicked the conversion to put Renegades in front.
Sinisa Erceg put Mariners back in front with a well-worked try, and at 10-7 the game was finely balanced until an incident minutes before the break turned the game Renegades' way.
Mariners forward Rich Biram reacted badly to a referee's decision and was given ten minutes in the sin-bin. In the time he was off the field, Renegades scored 10 points either side of the break, with Ian Henderson scoring a try and MacGuinness a penalty and a conversion.
Renegades dominated the game at the breakdown in the second half and went further ahead when MacGuinnes scored in the corner after a clever kick from scrumhalf Jay Roobottom. At 22-10 up, Renegades looked like they might run away with the game, but were prevented from adding to their tally by two try-saving tackles by Mariners' Bongani Ndlovu.
In ladies' rugby, Renegades continued their domination of the competition with a 11-4 win over Mariners, while Teachers thrashed Police 13-3.
Both teams went into the game unbeaten, and Mariners would have had some hope of pulling off a win.
However, Renegades continued their recent good form and quickly moved into a 3-0 lead as the pace of Melissa Field and Laura Haynes proved too much for their opponents.
Mariners hit back through Chantal Brown and Amanda Maenpaa, but further scores from Sue Rebello and Ruth Boo Leston gave Renegades a 5-2 lead at half-time.
The second half followed a similar pattern and Renegades eventually eased to a comfortable win.
Teachers dominated their game start to finish, with a Jennifer Crawford try one of the highlights of the afternoon.
