Top ten for Butterfield, Duffy at Games
Bermuda’s Tyler Butterfield and Flora Duffy produced outstanding top ten showings in the elite men’s and women’s triathlon at the Pan Am Games in Mexico yesterday.Butterfield placed sixth overall in a star-studded men’s field while Duffy came eighth in an equally formidable women’s field in Puerto Vallarta.Butterfield completed the 1.5K swim, 40K bike ride and 10K in an overall time of one hour, 50 minutes and three seconds.“I had to settle for sixth place and be content with the result, although I was well behind after the swim,” he wrote on Twitter.Brazilian Reinaldo Colucci won the men’s triathlon in one hour, 48 minutes and two seconds followed by USA’s Manuel Huerta and Brent McMahon (Canada) third.Also doing the Island proud was Duffy. The University of Colorado senior entered the race determined to place in the top ten and she did just that after covering the racecourse in two hours, three minutes and 38 seconds.USA’s Sarah Haskins won the women’s eventin a time of one hour, 57 minutes and 37 seconds and was the only competitor to complete the course under the two hour-barrier.Barbara Riveros Diaz (Chile) and Pamela Oliveria (Brazil) rounded off the podium finishers in the women’s field.Also in action in Puerto Vallarta at the weekend was veteran Bermuda sailor Malcolm Smith who failed to reach yesterday’s medal race in the Sunfish class after finishing tenth in the 12 boat fleet.Track and field athlete Shianne Smith was also scheduled to begin competing in the women’s Heptathlon at the Telmex Athletics Stadium yesterday.Today will see sprinter Tre Houston compete in the men’s 100 metres.
