Bermuda finish fifth in World Championship qualifiers

Bermuda men’s national volleyball team finished bottom of Group D at the recent World Championship qualifiers at the weekend in French St Martin.The Islanders took on Antigua and Barbuda, Anguilla, French St Martin and Dutch St Marteen. The top three teams advanced to the next round.Bermuda opening game was a tight encounter against French St Maarten, with the team losing 25-23, 25-23 and 27-25.Coach Bill Bucci’s side produced a better performance in their next game against Dutch St Maarten, going down 25-18, 28-26 and 25-21.In their third game, Bermuda lost in three sets to top-ranked team Antigua and Barbuda.Bermuda’s final match saw them pull off the upset of the tournament, defeating second place Anguilla in a five set thriller 16-25, 16-25, 28-26, 26-24 and 15-10.This result put Bermuda into a three-way tie for third place and a potential spot in the second round. However, they ended coming fifth on point differential.Bermuda’s John Gazzard won both the best libero and the best defensive player award for the tournament.Bucci said: “Our main goal for this tournament was to get our younger and up-and-coming players some experience playing at a higher level and we succeeded with flying colours.“Our players did an amazing job.”
