Trojans storm to victory over Zebras
Somerset Trojans 4PHC 1Four goals from four different players saw Somerset Trojans to a comfortable win over PHC in the opening match of the Dudley Eve at Goose Gosling Field last night. The West Enders got their equaliser courtesy of Tahj Wade, who cancelled out PHC’s Shakir Smith’s opener, while Ijahmon Mallory, Adrian Burrows, and Tyrell Burgess put the match beyond doubt.“It’s a good result but we are just getting started with the season so it was good to get a game like this under our belt,” said defender Mallory. “It’s a stepping stone for us in the right direction and we will take the good and the bad out of this match and focus for our next fixture which is in the league.“We can’t take much out of this match in regards to how we will play on the weekend because it will be a different game against a different team.”Both sides showed flashes of good wide play early on but it was sloppy defending rather than clever build up that gifted Smith the opener in the 22nd minute.Smith still had plenty of work to do, though, after a long diagonal ball in the Trojans area found the speedy winger who powerfully headed his effort into the ground and back across goalkeeper Shaquille Bean.Striker Kevin Lambe then had a chance to put Zebras up by two goals but tamely hit his effort straight at Bean.Trojans were level on 27 minutes, when Jameko Harvey-Outerbridge crossed to a wide open Wade who made no mistake from ten yards, and they were ahead 13 minutes later when Mikey Lambe hauled down Harvey-Outerbridge in the area.Mallory took his chance with aplomb from the penalty spot.Substitutes Burrows and Johnny Bean came on midway through the second half with the latter causing the Zebras back four all sorts of problems.Harvey-Outerbridge was the supplier again for Burrows’ goal which is an early candidate for goal of season, when the youngster picked up the striker who rifled his effort in one time from 20 yards out that curled into the top corner.Salt was thrown in the wounds of Zebras when Lambe was the culprit again, this time fouling Trae Harvey in the area, with new boy Burgess beating PHC keeper Troy Hall Jnr from the penalty spot.“The result didn’t go our way but the main thing is to get some match fitness under our belt and see how far we have come in our preparations, so it was a positive in that regard,” said PHC skipper Cecoy Robinson.“We play again in a few days time so this was good and now we can see what we need to work on and try to fix any issues we have.”Somerset Trojans: S Bean, T Ming, I Mallory, A Lambert (A Burrows, 65), J Harvey-Outerbridge, J Rogers, T Burgess, L Burgess (J Simmons, 55), A Trott, T Harvey, T Wade (J Bean, 54)Substitutes not used: V Blanchette, N Smith, R Simons, G SmithGoals: T Wade, 27, I Mallory, 40, A Burrows, 67, T Burgess, 90Yellow card: J Harvey-OuterbridgePHC: T Hall, M Lambe, K Lambe, C Robinson, J Sealy, S Smith (K Abraham, 84), C Robinson, M Piper, T Brown (R Deshields, 57), M Waldron, L MillerSubstitutes not used: T Place, M Simmons, D JohnsonGoals: S Smith, 22Referee: L RaynorMan of the Match: A Trott (Trojans)Devonshire Cougars 3 St George’s 4Substitute Cavon Ottley struck a sublime late winner to hand St George’s victory over Devonshire Cougars in a seven-goal thriller in the Dudley Eve last night.Spotting Devonshire Cougars’ substitute goalkeeper Lovintz Tota marginally off his line, Ottley showed plenty of composure to calmly lift the ball into the roof of the net from just outside the box.St George’s had taken the lead when Jahron Dickinson lobbed Cougars shot stopper Kioshi Trott in the 13th minute, but Cougars soon levelled through new signing Drewonde Bascome who curled in a free kick.Moments before half-time the West Enders restored their lead with Jarzinho Bassett finished smartly past Trott, who was replaced by Tota soon after the break following a collision with the St George’s goalscorer.Cougars started the second period the stronger side and it was no surprise when they levelled through Lejuan Simmons before taking the lead when Domico Coddington superbly volleyed home Darius Cox’s left wing cross. But Bassett pulled St George’s level when he notched his second of game from close range to set the stage for Ottley’s dramatic late winner.Devonshire Cougars: K Trott (L Tota, 45), K Tucker, J Seymour, D Cox, C Trott, L Simmons, M Steede, D Bascome, C Caisey, D Coddington, C Brangman (C Trott, 59)Substitutes not used: K Goddard, K Franks, A RussellGoals: D Bascome, 20, L Simmons, 56, Coddington 68Yellow cards: C Brangman, M SteedeSt George’s: C Marshall, D Signor, J Darrell, M Paynter, C Durham, A Heyliger (C Ottley, 70), J Dickinson, J Bassett, M Hodsall, J Simmons (K Williams, 65), A DouglasSubstitutes not used: R Seymour, Z BurgessGoals: J Dickinson, 13, J Bassett, 44, 75, Ottley 89Yellow cards: D Signor, J BassettReferee: R CannMan of the match: J Dickinson (St George’s)
