Allen and Fiddick rule the roads
Top local runners Stephen Allen and Victoria Fiddick won their respective road races in the Corporate Games on Saturday.Allen, representing Bermuda Police, stormed to victory in the men’s open 10K in 34 minutes and 52 seconds, finishing well ahead of AON Bermuda’s Phillip Farriers who posted a time of 53.33.Fiddick, who was a guest representative for the Argus Group, won the women’s open 5K by more than four minutes in 19.50. Gemma Gownie of Kane Insurance came second in 23.57 while Lindsey Forrest of Tokio Millennium finished third (24.08).Reflecting on his 10K win, Allen, a local football referee, said: “It was my first race of the season and it was good to be out there. There was no sun and cool conditions so the weather was very good for me.”In the men’s 5K, Bryan Thomas of KPMG claimed top honours in a time of 20.34, with Wesley Newbald of Digicel finishing second in 22.04 and Flanagan’s Onions footballer Stephen Lister taking third (20.34).Amy Germak of KPMG was the quickest in the women’s 5K 30-39 age group, posting a time of 22.11 to finish ahead of HSBC’s Zoe Roberts (21.53) and PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Caroline Layzell (22.11).North Rock’s Davis Mwangi was victorious in the men’s 5K 30-39 race (18.46). Nat Ackland of KPMG was second (20.43) and Tokio Millennium’s Brian Deegan third (20.57).In the women’s 5K 40-49 race Ingar Mesna took the honours, clocking 23.19 to finish ahead of Partner Re’s Celia Powell (25.35) and Bermuda Police’s Fancine Hodgson (26.48).Jeff Sangster of Validus Group triumphed in the men’s 5K 40-49 category (21.20), while Marsh McLennan’s Mark Simons finished runner-up (22.13) and Orbis Investment’s Mike McCallan came third in 22.19.Argus’ Brenda Dale claimed victory in the women’s 5K over-50 race with a time of 25.22, with Bacardi’s Jane Hulse grabbing second (29.34) and XL’s Judith Howe taking third (30.24).In the men’s 5K over-50 race Bermuda Monetary Authority Ifor Hughes finished first in a time of 19.36 and Bermuda Police’s Edward Harris claimed second in 22.09.Overseas visitor Bazak Ozer of Turkish Airways Technic secured victory in the women’s open 10K, posting a time of 48.22. Lucy Parker of KPMG came second in 50.48 and XL’s Selina Mouchette finished third (1:5.39)Aspen’s Vivienne Lockhead won the women’s 10K 30-39 in 49.10, Tracy Sutheland of Argus grabbed second (48.3) and Colonial Group’s Jacqueline Teunlsson came third in 49.10.Owen Delvin of Tokio Millennium crossed the finish line first in the men’s 10K 30-39 race in a time of 41.43. Chris Carbral of Aspen (41.52) came second and Paul Sikuku of AON (46.41) third.Bermuda Hospitals Board’s Kate Tomkins was crowned champion in the women’s 10K 40-49 race in a time of 50.21. PWC’s Mairi Redmond took second place in 51.18 and Elizabeth Deacon of Partner Re finished third in 55.32.In the men’s 10K 40-49 race Paul Blackburn of Bermuda Commercial Bank claimed victory in a time of 47.38 with Bermuda Police’s Derrick Simmons finishing second in 53.41.Butterfield & Vallis’ Teri Durrant won the women’s 10K over-50 race, posting a time of 57.14, while Davine Dickinson of XL came second (1:05.57) and PWC’s Edwina Atobash finishing third in 1:06.43.In the men’s 10K over-50 race Butterfield & Vallis’ Stanley Greenslade claimed top honours (43.31), Government Department’s Mike Osborn finished second (45.03) and overseas visitor Altan Denesy, of Turkey, representing Slegwers, grabbed third in 49.05.Bermuda Police were the only team to compete in the all male 4x400 metres relay at the National Sports Centre (NSC) on Saturday afternoon.Stephen Allen and his team-mates, Derrick Simons, Edward Harris and Sheldon McKenzie-Simons, posted a time of 4:23.04.Kane Insurance won the mixed 4x400m relay race in a time of 4:47.04, with KPMG taking second (4.50.06) and Tokio Millennium securing third (5:12.08).In the all female 4x400m relay Argus’ team of Fiddick, Tracy Sutheland, Betty Doyling and Kay-Annie Reid-Young cruised to victory in 5.03 ahead of Deloitte whose foursome finished in 5.05.06.Fiddick, a long distance specialist, said she had little experience of running in relay races.“I have only done in this type of race once before in my life, a long, long time ago. We had some fun training together and it’s been a lot of fun.“I ran the women’s 5K in the morning so my legs felt a little tired.”Fiddick admitted she was disappointed there had not been a larger turnout in the Corporate Games running events.“It was a shame there was only two women’s teams competing; it would have been great to have a lot. I think it’s a great idea, though, and hopefully it can grow from here.”Medals were presented the the top three competitors in each race by Bermuda National Athletics Associations head coach Troy Douglas at the NSC on Saturday.Yesterday’s triathlon at Albouy’s Point was cancelled due to bad weather.
