Lady Bluebirds head to Vegas for US Champs
Young Men’s Social Club Lady Bluebirds are about to take flight literally.The reigning Senior Winter League champions are due to travel to Las Vegas later this week to compete in the 2012 USA National Netball Championships involving 23 countries.It is the first time Lady Bluebirds have competed overseas.“This is the first time that Young Men’s Social Club is being represented in netball internationally and it feels awesome,” commented team manager Shantel DeShield. “Considering that we have been playing netball together for so long and gone through so much as a team and as a family this opportunity feels very worthwhile and rewarding.”Lady Bluebirds were invited to participate in the upcoming tournament, to be hosted by the University of Las Vegas, after winning a maiden Senior Winter League netball title last season.“The key to our success this far has been to stay positive, have fun and play netball,” DeShield added. “And that is what we intend to do when we go to Las Vegas.”Lady Bluebirds’ tour has been made possible thanks to the support of sponsors Freisenbruch-Meyer Insurance Services Ltd.While in Las Vegas, Lady Bluebirds’ players and team officials will be afforded the opportunity to attend coaching and umpire education clinics to be held in conjunction with the championships.“Many of us are coaches and umpires and aspiring coaches and umpires that assist with the club netball programme,” DeShield said. “Further development of coaches and umpires for Young Men’s Social Club will be the foundation for an even better junior programme and our future Bluebird netballers.“Our focus is not just to better our own netball programme, we also aspire to improve and assist with the development of the Bermuda Netball League as an entirety. The knowledge that we will gain will not only be beneficial for Young Men’s Social Club’s Netball Programme but we will also be able to use the knowledge and experience that we attain from this venture to share with other clubs that are a part of the Bermuda Netball Association.”Lady Bluebirds: Karlandra Smith (capt), Camille Masters, Antonia Mills, Ayanna Wolfe, Ebonie Burgess, Eshe Grant, Shadae Trott, Stacia Ming, Tahkeesha Welch, Kewanna Swan, Danielle Raynor, Kimmisha Perinchief, Erika Russell (coach), Shantel DeShield (team manager).n Young Men’s Social Club Baby Bluebirds and Bluebirds Young’ uns claimed the Under-15 and Under-12 titles during the Harold (Doc) Dowling Tournament at Bernard Park at the weekend.Baby Bluebirds edged Devonshire Colts 7-5 in their final round-robin match to finish the tournament unbeaten.Bluebird Young’ uns also remained unbeaten after cruising to a convincing 8-1 win against North Village Lady Rams in their final round-robin match.Maya Saunders (Netts Whites) and Shondae Woods-Bell (Nu-Arts Superstarz) won the shooting titles in the Under-12 and Under-15 age groups.Netts Whites won the Under-12 team shooting competition while Nu-Arts Superstarz claimed the Under-15 team shooting title.
