Beauty meets the beast in a classic final

The final of tonight’s World Rugby Classic will pit the beauty of Australia’s running game against the beast-like defence of South Africa. In what is sure to be an intriguing battle between two very different brands of rugby, South Africa will arguably be favouites after comfortable wins over Italy and defending champions Argentina. But when it comes to bums off seats excitement, it’s the Classic Wallabies who have won the hearts of the North Field revellers with their slick passing, pace and power.Australia’s coach Damian Smith admits it could go either way with his team braced for a bruising encounter against the star-studded Springboks.“Against the Classic Lions it was two very contrasting styles and we expect the same against South Africa,” said Smith.“We have to play to our strength which is speed out wide.”Smith’s side have been depleted by injuries and had to borrow three Americans against the Lions as well as Bermuda’s Mike Kane.Andrew Johns hopes to be fit for the final with Smith keen to have the halfback great team up with fellow rugby league legend Brad Fittler, who starred in Australia’s 19-10 win over the Lions on Thursday.“South Africa have some big names and we probably don’t have the experience of those guys,” he said.“I think Brad Fittler was our best player (against the Lions); he plays an amazing ball for a bloke who hasn’t ever played rugby union before.“I think they should send him over to England for Saturday’s international. He’s been incredible considering he hasn’t done any contact sport for eight years.“People here may not know it but Andrew Johns and Brad Fittler are two absolute superstars of rugby league. We’re really excited to have them here with us.”Despite missing several key players, Smith is adamant his team can pull off an upset and win their country’s first Classic title.“Hopefully we have come out of the Lions game without any injuries because I think we can give South Africa a good go,” he said.“We know we will be up against it, they will play a physical game against us, and we can only do our best.”Australia take on South Africa at 8pm, while France face Canada in the Plate final at 6.30pm.The opening match of the day will see Bermuda Barbarians play Atlanta Renegades at 4.45pm.
