McCann grabs the lead before storm halts plays
An afternoon thunderstorm brought yesterday’s third round of the $60,000 Gosling’s Invitational at Belmont Hills to a grinding halt. But not before the overall lead swapped hands for the second time in as many days.Canadian Brian McCann led by three shots over overnight leader Jordan Mitchell when play was halted at 3pm, sending the remaining eight threesomes on the course scurrying to the clubhouse.“There was a lot of thunder and lightening in the area so we called play for the day for safety reasons,” said tournament director Keith Cassidy.Past Bermuda Open winner McCann was standing on the tee at 14 while nearest rival Mitchell was in the fairway at 13 when mother nature intervened. The third round is scheduled to resume at 8am today.McCann personified the proverbial calm before the storm, rolling in three birdies to take advantage of Mitchell’s wobbly display with the putter on the front nine. The former Nationwide Tour player birdied the third, sixth and ninth holes to make the turn at three under for the round. With better luck, the frequent visitor’s lead might have been wider had he nailed a few makeable birdie putts.“I gave myself a lot of birdie chances but missed a bunch of close ones,” McCann said. “I’ve hit the ball pretty well all week but really haven’t given myself any chances for a big number.”McCann ended the day at nine under par 166 for the tournament.Overnight leader Mitchell might have protected his lead had he made the most of the birdie opportunities that came his way and avoided making back to back bogeys at seven and eight.“I didn’t really putt well on the front side,” he said. “I hit the ball okay but just couldn’t get any putts to fall.”The American ended the day in second at six under par 169 for the tournament and two over for the round.Alone in third is day one leader Matthew Hoffman at three under par 172. The Canadian bogeyed two of the opening nine holes and missed several birdie putts to end the day at two over par for the round. His shortened round was perhaps best summed up at six where his short birdie attempt lipped out of the cup, much to the player’s anguish.Hoffman’s younger brother Mark ended the day in tenth at two over par 177 for the tournament while defending champ Joe Horowitz came in fifth at two under par 173 for the tournament.Eric West is the highest placed local pro on the leader board in sixth at one under par 174 for the tournament. The former Port Royal head pro was at even par for the round when play was halted.West began his round on the back foot after he bogeyed the opening hole but grabbed a shot back after two-putting for birdie at the par five sixth hole. He dodged a bullet at five after his second shot from the rough ricocheted off the cart path, struck a tree and landed onto the green. He eventually parred the hole after his birdie attempt rolled just short of the cup.Past Gosling’s winner Dwayne Pearman and compatriot Daniel Augustus ended the day in eighth and ninth at one over par 176 for the tournament.Bermuda’s Chris Garland (11 over par 186) led the amateur field by six shots when play was suspended while Jeffrey Lindo (eight over par 218) shaved Hav Trott’s (four over par 214) lead in the senior field down to four shots after 54 holes.
