National team go down in US series
Bermuda’s senior national netball team came out on the losing end of their three-match series with a depleted USA team for the Atlantic Cup in Florida at the weekend.The Islanders started off on a promising note, edging their hosts 46-42 in Friday’s opening match held indoors at Pompey Park Recreation Center in Delray Beach.However, Bermuda’s hopes of returning home with the silverware were dashed as the Flying Eagles bounced back to win the remaining two matches.The Americans edged Bermuda 44-39 in another close encounter on Saturday morning to level the series at one win apiece and set the stage for a winner-take-all in the third and final contest.The Flying Eagles, whose squad were missing players from the Northeast which was hard hit by Hurricane Sandy, then clinched the series to lift the inaugural Atlantic Cup after romping to a comfortable 57-35 win in the final contest held on Saturday night.“USA came gunning at us and our guys panicked under pressure,” Bermuda head coach Anthony Mouchette told The Royal Gazette.“We basically committed a lot of unnecessary turnovers that the opposition took advantage of.“But overall our team played really, really well and have nothing to be ashamed of. We managed to win one of our three games and I’m quite proud of the players who did Bermuda proud.”The Bermuda team were due to return from their whirlwind tour yesterday.Among those in attendance at last weekend’s event was International Netball Federation (INF) president Ms Molly Rhone.n SS Warriors defeated North Village Rams Too 34-29 in the weekend’s only match in the Senior Winter League.Salina Bascome scored a game high 18 points for Warriors while daughter Drew added 10.Bascome’s other daughter, Drewnae, led Rams Too, scoring with 14 points while team-mate T’Yanna Hayward added 10.Only one match was played at the weekend due to the national team’s tour of Florida.
