Mix of youth and experience for squad team

Bermuda will send a mix of youth and experience to represent the country in squash at the NatWest Island Games this summer.

The competition, which is due to take place at the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association (BSRA) courts next month, will see the Island compete in all phases of the sport.

The selection process was based on recent results in the Digicel National Championships and other local and international results during the last year.

“The BSRA is very happy that these players were all fit and available for selection,” said BSRA director Patrick Foster, who is among those involved in the competition.

“Again Bermuda has great strength in depth in this event and are hoping to weather strong opposition from especially Jersey and Cayman Islands in reaching the medal stages of this event.”

Among those taking to the courts will be three internationally experienced players in Foster, Micah Franklin and Nick Kyme, all of who are used to being on the international stage.

Kyme was formerly number 63 in the world, while Franklin is currently number 156 in the world and finished fourth at the previous Games in the Isle of Wight.

Foster will be competing in his first Games and was formerly ranked 69th in the world.

In the ladies section, Bermuda number one Laura Robinson will look to improve on her 2011 Games performance, while Rachel Barnes and Susie Lacey will be making their debuts in the competition.

“We have a very strong presence in the men’s singles with all three players either currently or in the past ranked in the world. Nick Kyme will be looking to add to past medals in this event, Micah Franklin was fourth in the 2011 Island Games and will definitely be pushing for a medal this time, and myself who will be taking part in my first Island Games,” added Foster.

“The ladies singles features Laura Robinson who is the favourite to improve on her 2011 performance in Isle of Wight.

“Rachel Barnes is currently studying in the US and competing for Bowdoin University. Her fitness and strength should put her in a great position to push for a medal, and Susie Lacey is a fantastic athlete in her first ever international appearance for Bermuda. We are hoping for great performances from all the girls.

“In the doubles, Laura will team up with Noah Browne for the mixed event.

“Noah at 6’4” tall and extremely gifted should prove very strong on the doubles court. With Laura in the mixed and Island Games Veteran Chris Stout in the men’s doubles, Noah will have the ideal teammates to hopefully reach the latter stages of each event.

“The Bermuda ladies doubles team is doubles specialists and experienced Island Games competitors Denise Kyme and Liz Martin.

“Both are past club and national champions. They have more than enough experience and racquet abilities to pull off a big win for Bermuda.”
