Netballers suffer a clean sweep

Bermuda’s senior national netballers came away empty-handed in their three-match series with Canada at Whitney Institute last week.The Canadians swept the series to extend their dominance over Bermuda who are ranked seven places below them in the world rankings.The visitors got past their hosts 54-37 in the opening match before clinching the series in the next match courtesy of a 47-32 win.Canada then completed the sweep with their third win in as many days after prevailing 53-24 against their hosts.There were no statistics provided from the first encounter.Bermuda captain Marissa Brangman (15) and Danielle Raynor (13) combined for 28 points in the hosts’ second straight loss while Cherry DonNickie (26) and Morgan M’Laughlin (21) accounted for all of the visitors’ scoring.Brangman (13) also led the local scoring in Bermuda’s third and final match while Ebonie Burgess chipped in with 11 points.DonNickie poured in a game high 38 for the Canadians while team-mate added 15.Bermuda were coached on the sidelines by head coach Jene Charles and her assistant Merle Parfitt.Last week’s tournament marked the first time that Bermuda has hosted international matches in more than a decade and was the brainchild of United States of America Netball Association (USANA) secretary Carole Hoekrein.Also touring the Island last week was the England All-Saints who provided valuable match practice for Bermuda’s Under 21 national team that are preparing for this month’s World Youth Netball Championships in Glasgow, Scotland.Bermuda: Marissa Brangman (captain), Jadirra Harvey (vice-captain), Danielle Raynor, Ebonie Burgess, Jamila Godwin, Dominic Richardson, Asante Chapman, Chaquita Simmons, Arkeita Fubler, Nina Webb, Kimale Evans, Karlandra Smith, McKeisha Smith.
