Netball champs withdraw from league
A new Senior Winter League champion will be crowned this year.
That’s because last year’s winners, Data Tech Netts, have withdrawn and, as such, won’t be around to defend their crown.
Data Tech Netts are among four teams who have withdrawn, the others being North Village Lady Rams, Lady Rams Too and DC Warriors.
Data Tech have dissolved with several of their players now coaching and mentoring the club’s junior team, Signworx Netts.
Village Too and DC Warriors both struggled with player shortage last season and decided to disband while it remains unclear why Lady Rams folded.
SS Tigers and Robin Hood have merged to become Robinhood Tigers while Bluebird Juniors are the latest addition to the league that has dwindled from ten to six teams.
The 2013-14 Senior Winter League officially gets underway tomorrow with three matches on tap at Bernard Park.
Lady Bluebirds and Bluebirds Too will do battle on court one at 5pm while Robinhood Tigers will lock horns with Signworx Netts on court two with tip-off also slated for 5pm.
The remaining match will pit newly crowned Sylvia Eastley Tournament champs Warwick Pink Panthers against Blazzin Bluebirds who will start at 6:15pm on court two.
Panthers clinched the season opening Sylvia Eastley Tournament with an unblemished 5-0 record to put an end to Lady Bluebirds’ two-year reign as champions and deny the latter of an impressive hat trick.
Lady Bluebirds were forced to settle for bridesmaids honours this time around with Signworx Netts rounding off the top three.
This year will see unattached umpires paid a stipend for their services.
Part proceeds from fundraisers will be allocated towards the new incentive.
• Fredricka Samuels was crowned champion of the Sylvia Eastley Tournament shooting competition.
The Blazzin Bluebirds player outshot Lady Bluebirds Eshe Grant in a tie-break after the two women remained deadlocked after ten attempts at goal.
