Confidence is key for Wells, says Ming

Perfect start: Wells celebrates scoring against QPR

Nahki Wells’s searing confidence will override any pressure he is under at Huddersfield Town, according to Damon Ming, his former Dandy Town team-mate.

Wells, 23, is Huddersfield’s record signing after making the short trek across West Yorkshire from Bradford City for £1.3?million.

He has scored two goals in as many matches for the Sky Bet Championship side, providing an instant return on the cash shelved out for the Bermuda striker.

His first goal was the match-winner in Huddersfield’s last-gasp win over Millwall less than 24 hours after his transfer.

Wells then scored the leveller at QPR midway through the second half, although the home side went on to win the game 2-1.

Ming, who has played for various clubs in England, including Barnet, is thrilled to see his former team-mate continuing the scoring form that made him a firm favourite at the Coral Windows Stadium.

“Not many players are able, or even capable, of going out and getting goals in back-to-back games, so for him to go out and do that just shows you how confident he is in front of goal at the moment,” Ming said.

“If you give him the opportunity, nine times out of ten he will reward the faith you have put in him. There is always going to be pressure on a player, regardless of the price tag.

“The main point is to not get caught up in the moment, stick to what you know and play your game. For Nahki, the obvious way to repay the money the club paid for your services is to hit the back of the net and he has done just that.

“I’m not surprised at how well he has started, he is reaping the rewards of the hard work being put in.”

Ming also believes that the Bradford City fans should be appreciative of Wells for his services to the club and remember the good times when he helped them achieve promotion from League Two and reach the Capital One Cup final. A section of Bradford’s supporters have voiced their resentment that Wells decided to sign for their regional rivals Huddersfield.

Wells had scored 15 goals in 21 appearances for Bradford this season before suffering an ankle injury that kept him out of the side for nearly three weeks.

“The way he started off the season was great, knocking in goals left, right and centre, so I don’t think his confidence would have turned into nerves,” Ming added.

“Fans can be mad sometimes, but the two clubs came to an agreement and he left. It is bittersweet in their eyes. They have big money for him, but he was a fans’ favourite and they have to accept it and remember what he has done for them.”

Huddersfield host Charlton Athletic at the John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday in the fourth round of the FA Cup, but Wells is cup-tied.
