Gym brings facility up to Olympic standard

Swim and gym: the NSC believe its new gym will make the venue even more attractive to elite teams visiting the island

A new gym has opened at the National Sports Centre making it an even more attractive venue for overseas teams.

Amy Fox, the aquatic and fitness manager, said a gym was needed to make Bermuda a suitable training destination for international teams.

The Denmark swim team recently spent two weeks training at the facility preparing for this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio, with Nick Juba, the head coach, saying he would “recommend the NSC to anyone”.

The new gym is situated behind the Aquatic Centre’s changing rooms and is equipped with six spin bikes, a leg press, two squat racks, dumbbells from 5lbs to 100lbs, two incline benches, two total gyms, resistance bands/tubing, gym balls, medicine balls, kettle bells and stretching mats.

“Many of our long-term users of the pool and or track had asked if we planned on building a gym on site,” Fox said. “They thought it would be a great addition and said they would love to be able to use the pool and the gym or track and the gym without having to move to another site.

“It will also help with the training for Bermuda national teams or other teams and groups as they train for different competitions or just to improve their everyday fitness. We will have specific times available for teams only.

“We already have fields, two running tracks, a pool and a hockey turf so really we have almost everything you need for teams and also individuals. The only thing we were missing was a gym.

“It really brings everything together as any user can now do their cardio and weightlifting and toning all at the same site. They no longer have to come to the pool to do their swimming and then drive to another site to use the gym.

“It ties the whole site together and is really great for teams that might not already have a gym to use and are doing all dryland training using their own equipment. At the moment the pool and the gym come as a package pass, so it is really great and extremely affordable.”

Opening hours are Monday to Friday 6.30am to 7pm, Saturday 1pm to 5pm and Sunday 9am to 1pm.
