Cyclists Kaden Hopkins, Matthew Oliveira and Alyssa Rowse — presently representing Bermuda at the NatWest Island Games in Gotland — will wear Bermuda’s colours again next month at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Nassau, Bahamas.

The Bermuda Olympic Association yesterday confirmed the 20 athletes who will compete in the Games, including a girls rugby sevens team.

The Games are for athletes 18 and under and will see athletes from 70 commonwealth countries and UK overseas territories competing in nine sports from July 19 to 23.

Bermuda will also be represented in athletics by sprinter Deneo Brangman and high jumper Sakari Famous, who will compete tomorrow in the Bermuda Invitational Permit Meet. Madelyn Moore and Jesse Washington, two of the island’s top young swimmers, are also in the team.

The athletes will be accompanied by their coaches, managers and led by chef de mission Mia Black, the vice-president of the Bermuda National Athletics Association. BOA officials are also accompanying the team.

The sixth edition of the Games look set to be the biggest with about 1,300 athletes between the ages of 14 and 18 battling for 94 medals in nine sports: athletics, swimming, beach football, boxing, cycling, judo, rugby sevens, tennis and beach volleyball.

The cyclists will participate in road races on the streets of New Providence, otherwise the events will be centred around the Queen Elizabeth Sports Centre which includes the Thomas A. Robinson Stadium, the venue for athletics and the opening and closing ceremonies.

St Lucia was scheduled to host the Games but pulled out in 2015, with Bahamas was selected as the replacement in 2016.
