Dowling looks to build on strong start

Quince Dowling and co-pilot Tai Bean

Quince’ Dowling hopes to build on his flying start to the season during the Spanish Point Boat Club national races in the Great Sound on Sunday.

Dowling and co-pilot Tai Bean were crowned overall winners of the St George’s Marine Expo Race in St George’s Harbour in the Bermuda Power Boat Association’s season opener last weekend.

The pair, who compete in the B class, accumulated the most points during the two timed races on a triangular racecourse to finish ten points clear of nearest rivals David Selley, Shane Madeiros and Henry Talbot.

“It was a good victory because it was unexpected,” Dowling said.

“There was another boat in the field faster than mine, so I knew what I was up against. But he ended up breaking down and I ended up getting two firsts to go ahead on points, which gives me a little head start.”

Selley and Madeiros finished tied for first in the A class, while Talbot won the S class. Shawn Butterfield and co-pilot Jermal Woolridge were the only entry in the D class.

Dowling hopes to pick up where he left off on Sunday.

“The goal is to come first and I know there is going to be more competition coming out this weekend,” he said. “I’m just trying to get the victory.”

“I’m ready for the next race and the goal is to keep improving.”

The two races on Sunday will be the first of a six-race series, with the remaining races to be held on July 14 and September 22 at the same venue.

The overall and class winners will be determined by points accumulated throughout the series.
