House to debate tougher gun violence changes

Tougher laws to tackle Bermuda’s worsening gun crime are to be put under scrutiny today.MPs in the House of Assembly will discuss The Bail Amendment Act and The Firearms Amendment Act which both aim to give police extra powers.Under the amendments to the Bail Act, police officers can seize travel documents from suspects who had yet to be charged with serious crimes. Police can also impose curfews. The amendments to the Firearms Act gave police the power to detain gun suspects for a month without charge.Police previously had 72 hours to charge or release those arrested for firearms or ammunition offences. They can now apply for a warrant of detention to hold them for an extra 14 days and make a second application for a further 14-day extension. The extension is for the purposes of gathering evidence or obtaining forensic results and not for questioning.Long-term detainees will also be allowed to be detained in correctional facilities in police cells. This is because the police can no longer accommodate longer-term detention. Both Acts will get their second reading today by Attorney General Michael Scott.Shadow Attorney General Trevor Moniz said: “I don’t anticipate either Act to be controversial but they will probably prompt a lively debate.”
