Premier meets EU officials

Premier Paula Cox is in Brussels today to take part in meetings that offer greater insight into the workings of the European Union and ‘how Bermuda can best be positioned as this governing body addresses the changing economies of its member nations’, Government said in a statement last night.Ms Cox is due to meet Andy Lebrecht, Deputy Representative with the UK Permanent Representation office in Brussels. She has already held a meeting with the Head of Division for EU external relations at the European Commission and received a positive response to a request for opportunities for Bermudians to be able to have secondments to work at the European Commission.She has also met with the Governance and External Relations Department of the Directorate General for the Single Market, and a meeting conducted with the Directorate General for Taxation and Customs with tax trends and concerns the general topics was described as ‘productive’.The Premier is to wrap up today’s sessions when she meets the Head of Unit for the Americas in the European External Action Service and representatives of the Task Force for Overseas Territories in DG DEVCO (Developing Countries).Ms Cox aims to provide an understanding of Bermuda’s constitutional situation, both internally and with regard to the UK and set out its strategy towards the EU and how this relates to Bermuda’s other bilateral and multilateral relationships.Government said UK authorities have made clear they welcome the initiative by Bermuda to be more proactive in its relations with the EU and its Member States. Governor Sir Richard Gozney is attending a number of the meetings with Ms Cox.All meetings being held in Brussels are said to be informal, non-negotiating sessions; and are not intended in any way to lead to binding decisions or commitments on either side.Last night’s Government statement added: “Beneficial to our developing relation with the EU are Bermuda’s seeking equivalence under Solvency II (a process which is already underway) and its achieving recognition under the 2006 Statutory Audit Directive.”
