Govt’s Business Development Unit praised by Minister

The doom and gloom of the economic downturn has lead to a vast array of innovative opportunities, according to Business Development and Tourism Minister Patrice Minors.Ms Minors told the House of Assembly that people were coming up with “existing, renewed and compelling partnerships” to get the Island through the recession. She highlighted the success of the Business Development Unit, which was set up to strengthen the economy with new opportunities between tourism and international business. She said the Business Development Unit which is simply known as The Unit is helping to “deliver better value for money and ultimately to strengthen Bermuda as a jurisdiction.”Ms Minors said: “We should all be encouraged as there is a lot of good work being done by amazing people.“The economic challenges are sharpening stakeholder focus and all sectors are becoming hungry for solutions fostering many intriguing opportunities.”Ms Minors went on to explain that Cabinet had approved a range of amendments to the Companies Act 1981 to remove inefficiency and unnecessary formality. She said the Asset Management Task Force, which was set up in January, had submitted a report stating that “the future success of Bermuda’s asset management sector hinges on our ability to attract international investors as well as additional expertise.”Ms Minors said the Task Force had already generated new interest in Bermuda and was in the process of drafting up a business plan. The idea is to provide a “red carpet” experience.
