Senator raises questions about prison security

Shadow National Security Minister Michael Dunkley says security is an issue at Westgate.

Shadow National Security Minister Michael Dunkley has raised concerns about security at Westgate saying: “We have got to get on top of this.”Senator Dunkley told the Senate yesterday that a Westgate prisoner was as “high as a kite” when he spoke to visiting members of a committee on crime. The One Bermuda Alliance Senate leader also said he’d heard that a jet ski had attempted to pick up an inmate who was released from Westgate because the man couldn’t travel through Somerset due to gang affiliations.Sen Dunkley said he had previously spoken about his concerns about cellphones and drugs getting into Westgate. He said members of the Joint Select Committee on Crime visited the prison at the end of last year and told him that one inmate who agreed to be interviewed was “as high as a kite”.But prison commissioner Edward Lamb said although it was a constant challenge, they remained “relentless in efforts to maintain very high standards of security”.Sen Dunkley raised his security concerns in his Motion to Adjourn speech saying criminals were more violent than ever before and “we need to deal with it”.He stated that a jet ski had been found abandoned at Westgate Beach last year and then on Wednesday attempts were made to pick up an inmate by jet ski. However, it is understood that the man did not get on a jet ski from Westgate. He made his way to Dockyard, then travelled by jet ski from Dockyard to Spanish Point.Sen Dunkley said these recent incidents raised the question of “how secure are our correctional facilities?”Sen Dunkley said with the increase in anti-social behaviour, he was concerned for the safety of prisoners and prison officers. He said: “This is a challenge within the prison system and we need to deal with it”.Speaking to The Royal Gazette later yesterday, Sen Dunkley said he believed “a security review of rules and regulations” needed to be carried out.Sen Dunkley said: “With the heightened crime level and the increase in gang activity, I am very concerned about our correctional facilities.“I just want to make sure the proper procedures are in place and are being adhered to.“We are facing challenges like we have never faced before and are dealing with violent gangsters”.Sen Dunkley added: “We have to have a higher level of security. We have got to get on top of the game.“I am Shadow Minister for National Security and I’m not going to keep quiet about this.”However Colonel Lamb said: “We in Corrections daily strive to ensure a safe and secure environment in our facilities. This is a constant challenge for us but we are diligent and relentless in our efforts to maintain very high standards of security”.Mr Lamb added that Sen Dunkley “has his facts a little skewed” as the inmate is believed to have left Dockyard, outside the perimeter fencing of Westgate, on a jet ski.He said: “How a former inmate chooses to make his way to his destination after he is released from our custody is beyond our remit and outside our control.”Mr Lamb also said Corrections welcomed feedback from the public on any concerns they might have, adding: “Perhaps it would have been more productive for Senator Dunkley to raise his concerns about an inmate he perceived to be high at the time it allegedly occurred rather than months later”.
