Aquaculture specialist to speak during workshop

A US aquaculture expert will lead a free workshop this week on starting up and earning money from fish-farming.With three quarters of our seafood imported to the Island, aquaculture stands to boost Bermuda’s food security, said Environment Minister Marc Bean. Bermuda-farmed fish could also become an export product to nearby US cities, he said. “You could literally harvest fish in the morning, and have it in a restaurant for lunch or dinner that same day.”Mr Bean added: “We also have a daily connection into Europe, and let’s not forget the Bermuda brand. “The development of an export market for Bermuda products would bring valuable foreign exchange into Bermuda, at a time when this is critical for our economy.”The December 1 workshop starts 9.30am at the Department of Environmental Protection. As well as aquaculture specialist Jesse Chappell, the talk will include a representative from the Bermuda Stock Exchange to discuss public capital.Anyone wishing to attend should contact Juliet Spencer at the Department of Environmental Protection on 236-4201, or 239-2317.
